TEXAS DEEP FREEZE
EMERGENCY APPEAL

The intense winter storm has wreaked havoc all across the U.S, and unfortunately, Texans are witnessing the worst of it.

The crisis in electricity supply throughout the state has forced millions to face days without any power or heat, with hundreds of thousands on the street without a home, freezing to death. On Wednesday, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said that around 700,000 homes had electricity restored overnight, but more than 3.4 million still did not have power late Wednesday morning.

Today, more than 3 million in Texas are still without power, and forecasts are predicting more ice and low temperatures ahead.

MAUSA is working on the ground with partners in Dallas to provide safe shelter and warm meals to over 1,000 individuals experiencing homelessness.

We have partnered with The Stewpot in Dallas, an organization that offers a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals in Dallas, providing resources for basic survival needs. Together, we are collaborating with Union Gospel Mission, the City of Dallas – Office of Homeless Solutions, and several United Methodist churches, to further maximize our impact.

Our goal is to help individuals spend a few nights at the Dallas Convention Center where they will be able to stay warm and have food to eat. We are also working to help the homeless stay in hotels for as long as needed.

The stark contrast in areas with electricity and without has revealed a severely distressed system. Lawmakers are calling for hearings, along with an inquiry into the Electric Reliability Council, which operates the electric grid.
